Youssef Nabil

I found Youssef Nabil the last time I was in Cape Town and his book “I won’t let you die” jumped out and hit me. quite literally, I knocked it off the shelf.

He takes pictures of either himself superimposed on various backgrounds, or of ageing Egyptian movie stars. What makes him particularly awesome is that he hand colours in the silver gelatin prints, so the photos have a fuzzy, but blemish free sort of quality.

His bio on his website talks about evoking a sense of “longing and nostalgia that allows his photographs to flicker between our time and another era.”

I agree, but I think what he does is create something spectacularly kitsch, in a Fantasy Island sort of way. Less about longing, and more about appreciation.
